The World Series

The World Series is the yearly championship series for Major League Baseball. One of the most popular sporting events on the American calendar, it has been running since 1903. It is held between the respective winners of the American League and the National League, and the winner is determined after a series of best-of-seven playoffs. The series is played mainly in October, though it occasionally carries over into November, and is also dubbed ‘the Fall Classic’ because of this.

Before 1969, the World Series would automatically be contested by the teams that held the best record in win-loss throughout the season in their respective leagues. However, from this year on, each league has conducted a championship series prior to the World Series in order to choose who advances and who does not. In total, the World Series has been played 113 times, with the American League winning 65 of the contests and the National League just 48.

This year, 2017, saw the World Series play out between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Houston Astros. All seven games were played, with the Astros finally victorious at the end of the seventh, with a score of 5 -1. This marks the first time the Astros have ever won the series.

The most prolific team in the World Series has been the New York Yankees, playing in 40 of the contests and winning 27 of them. Over the years, other teams have seen repeated moderate success but, as yet, no one has come close to the Yankees. In fact, the Yankees have the distinction of being the last team to win consecutively – in 1998, 1999 and 2000 – something that has yet to be repeated in recent times. Currently, in 2017, this is the longest period the sport has gone without a consecutive win.
